I was doing such a session (you lot can observe out more about them here) before this week and I showed the author how to upload a file on her Squarespace site. She was so impressed that I idea it was worth a blog post!

It's a actually useful function.

So here we go – how to upload a file to your Squarespace website…

Now you might be wondering why you would want to practise this, or what I even mean by a 'file'.

A file is something similar a PDF or Word document. Information technology tin can even exist an prototype.

I've uploaded files to my clients' websites on a number of occasions for various different reasons, but some of the most common are:

  1. To display copies of newspaper/magazine articles or reviews which are non online or are behind a paywall

  2. To offer content that may have spoilers in, such every bit book club questions or reading group guides

  3. To provide special extras to your website visitors, such as curt stories based around characters in your novels

So for example, on Beth O'Leary's website, she has an Extras page, and on here you tin read messages sent between the ii main characters from her bestseller The Flatshare:

Because these letters have spoilers in, nosotros didn't desire to just have them visible on the folio in an image block.

Instead, we used the link editor and the push block to upload them, so that when people visit the site, they can click on the button and the letters will popular up in a new window of their browser.

This stops website visitors who might not have read the book accidentally stumbling on spoilers.

Cool huh?

The best flake about it is that it's very easy to do, using the Link Editor function.

You can link to a file from normal text, or from a button. Here'southward how it works:

Some file types download automatically rather than opening in the browser, regardless of this setting.

File types you can apply

You can upload most types of files to your site. Here are some common file types you might apply:

.zippo files - Y'all can simply add together one file to each link. To link to multiple files at once, you tin can zippo the files together and upload the .naught file.

.pdf files – this is what I utilize mostly for reader guides/volume society questions/extra content.

.jpeg files – apply these when you lot're uploading an prototype of a press review from a physical edition of a mag or newspaper

.docx files – you can upload Give-and-take files likewise but bear in heed that visitors can only download .docx files, even if you lot check the 'Open up in New Window' option.
